Prioritizing Student Mental Health in the Christina School District
The Christina School District is taking significant strides to prioritize student mental health this school year. In our commitment to fostering a learning environment that supports the whole child, we have implemented a new curriculum for the 2024-2025 school year focusing on mental health literacy (MHL) for all students, K-12.
For our youngest learners in grades K-3, each school will incorporate instruction through their chosen social-emotional learning curriculum. For students in grades 4-12, we are proud to introduce a comprehensive mental health and depression awareness program developed by a highly respected mental health education and advocacy organization, Erika’s Lighthouse: A Beacon of Hope for Adolescent Depression.
This program is designed with key goals in mind:
- Raise awareness of good mental health and its importance for overall well-being.
- Identify the signs of depression and understand the risk and warning signs of suicide.
- Reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues to create a more open and supportive community.
- Encourage help-seeking behaviors among students and foster a culture of care.
“Mental health is health; therefore, it is as crucial as physical health in determining a student’s overall success and happiness,” said Dr. Gina Moody, Director of Student Services and Whole Child Support. “By prioritizing mental health literacy and providing students with the tools to understand and navigate their emotions, we are equipping them for healthier, happier futures.”
Our district wants all of our students to be physically and mentally healthy. We encourage all students to take control of their mental health and learn how to seek help for themselves or a friend if needed. Through these programs, we aim to communicate an important message to our students… Everyone deserves to have good mental health. While depression is a common and serious issue, there is always hope and support available. You are not alone in this journey!
Thanks to the generous donations of donors, these programs are made available at no cost to our schools. For more information about Erika’s Lighthouse, please visit www.erikaslighthouse.org.
