    Family reading hour...

    Regular trips to the library...

Playing word games in the car...

What do these things have in common?

They're all activities parents can use to encourage their children to read.

Here are a few other ways to spark reading. Use them to help your child improve their desire and ability to read.

    Read this and that...
Bring home fun things for your children to read. These items might include a comic strip from the newspaper, a greeting card, or even a fortune cookie from lunch. Also, keep an assortment of things to read at home such as poetry books, magazines, and joke books.

    Be a reading model...

Children often like to do what you do--if you don't push too much! In the evening, curl up with a book. More often than not, your child will grab a book and join you.

    Make reading valuable...

It's important for your kids to know that reading can be helpful. Help them choose books that relate to their interests. For example, if your child plays soccer, find a book on basic soccer skills, Reading it together may help him/her at their next practice or game.

    Enjoy reading!
