Kindergarten
Introduction to music concepts of singing, moving to steady beat, instrument
exploration, folk dances, singing games, listening to and viewing recorded examples
of music representing a wide variety of styles and cultures, participate in creating
and improvising musical arrangements and compositions.
1st Grade
Development of music concepts of singing, moving to steady beat, instrument
exploration, folk dances, singing games, listening to and viewing recorded examples
of music representing a wide variety of styles and cultures, participate in creating
and improvising musical arrangements and compositions.
2nd Grade
Continue to develop music concepts described above. Demonstrate proficiency in
imitating simple vocal patterns, imitating simple rhythm patterns on un-pitched
percussion instruments.
3rd Grade
Continue to develop the music concepts and demonstrate the proficiencies
described above. Begin formal study of reading and writing music notation. Begin to
play the recorder and demonstrate proficiency in playing with a steady beat by end
of year. Demonstrate proficiency at creating rhythmic accompaniments by ear by
the end of the year. Demonstrate proficiency in singing as part of a group following
the gestures of a conductor.
4th Grade
Extend knowledge of musical concepts of singing and playing instruments. Continue
to develop other concepts described above. Continue to develop recorder
technique and ability to read and write music notation. Develop ability to play
independently as part of an ensemble. Demonstrate proficiency to classify
instruments by family and voice parts by range.
5th Grade
Extend knowledge of musical concepts of singing and playing instruments. Extend
knowledge in expressing personal preference and identifying ways of evaluating
music and musical performance. Continue to develop techniques of arranging and
composing music within certain guidelines using a variety of classroom and
orchestral instruments. Begin the study of music history.
