Middle School Uniform Dress Code

The Christina School District Dress Code is a set of guidelines that outline the standards for student attire while attending school. The goal of this protocol is to promote a sense of community, reduce distractions, and create a more focused learning environment. Students shall dress in clothes that promote a safe and respectful learning environment, in alignment with the Christina School District Student Manual.
All Christina School District (CSD) middle schools and select elementary schools (Jennie E. Smith Elementary and Albert H. Jones Elementary School) participate in the school uniform program. Students in participating schools are required to wear the designated school uniform during school hours, including when attending school-sponsored events or field trips, unless otherwise indicated by school administration. The following schools participate in the school uniform program:
- The Bayard School (Grades 1-8)
- Gauger-Cobbs Middle School (Grades 6-8)
- George V. Kirk Middle School (Grades 6-8)
- Albert H. Jones Elementary School (Grades K-5)
- Maurice Pritchett Sr. Academy (Grades 1-8)
- Shue-Medill Middle School (Grades 6-8)
- Jennie E. Smith Elementary School (Grades K-5)
The following dress code applies to students who attend any Christina School District that participate in the Uniform Dress Code ( all middle schools and select elementary schools).

Uniform Components
- Tops: Students may wear collared shirts in specific colors (See: Shirts).
- Bottoms: Students may wear khaki or navy pants, shorts, skirts, or jumpers.
- Footwear: Footwear must be worn at all times for safety reasons.

Shirts
Colors
- 6th Grade – Red
- 7th Grade – Light Gray
- 8th Grade – Navy Blue
Requirements- Long or short-sleeved collared “polo style” shirts
- Shirt sizing: Must cover chest and midriff (when hands are raised)
- Shirt cannot be cinched, tied, or clipped in the back
- No patterns, designs, or artwork are allowed
- Sleeveless shirts or T-shirts are NOT permitted

Bottoms
Colors:
- Students will wear navy blue, black, or khaki pants, shorts, skirts or jumpers
Requirements
- The length of skirts, skorts, shorts, and dresses must be at least mid-thigh in length.
- Pants and shorts are to be worn at the waist.
- No patterns, artwork, or designs permitted
- Leggings, Jeggings/Tights cannot be worn as a substitute for pants; however leggings, jeggings/tights may be worn under length-appropriate skirts/ shorts.

Sweaters/Jackets
- Cardigans, pullover sweaters, or hooded sweatshirts, are permitted but must be the same color as grade-level shirts. Per the safety guidelines with the Christina School District Student Manual, hoods cannot be worn while on the campus.
- Hoodies/sweatshirts with a hood are not permitted to be worn with the hood up while on the campus due to school safety.
- No patterns, designs, logos or artwork, other than a school insignia
- Collared school uniform shirt must be worn under these garments

Footwear
- Footwear must be worn at all times for safety reasons.

Headwear
- All individuals on a school Campus must be identifiable, and faces must be immediately and completely visible. Hats, caps, hoods (up), and bandanas are NOT PERMITTED to be worn while on the Campus. This is a safety violation.

Accessories
- Students wearing jewelry or accessories that may be considered unsafe or inappropriate to the learning environment may be subject to review by the administration.

Exceptions*- Exceptions to the dress codes above will be made on a case-by-case basis in order to accommodate bona fide religious beliefs and special health conditions.
- The wearing of official and approved school club and school or district organization apparel shall not be considered a violation of dress codes.
- Building Administrators at each school shall have the discretion to designate “School Spirit Days” and other special dress days. Examples of such days include, but are not limited to, non-uniform days, jeans days, favorite jersey days, hat days, special theme days, etc.
- Specific dress requirements may be assigned to students participating in technical labs or other classes or activities that necessitate the wearing of specific clothing in or to maintain the health and safety of students and others. These class or activity-specific dress requirements will be established by Building Administrators in conjunction with classroom teachers and will be delineated in the class, lab, or activity syllabus. Failure of a student to abide by these health and safety dress requirements may result in the student’s removal from that class, lab, or activity.
